It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Cyphers, a beloved figure in the world of horror movies. Charles, known for his chilling portrayals on the big screen, peacefully left us at the age of 85 after a brief illness.

Charles’s talent for captivating audiences with his memorable performances will forever be etched in our hearts. One of his most iconic roles was that of Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the 1978 Halloween movie, a character he reprised in sequels released in 1981 and 2021. His return for Halloween Kills, the third movie in the series, was both shocking and wonderful.

Reflecting on the experience, Charles expressed his gratitude, saying, “Most of the people are dead, so thank goodness I didn’t die, because they brought me back.” His enthusiasm to once again portray Sheriff Brackett was palpable, and he cherished the opportunity to be part of the franchise that had such a profound impact on his career.

Beyond the Halloween movies, Charles embarked on a diverse acting journey, leaving an indelible mark wherever he went. He collaborated with Halloween director John Carpenter on multiple occasions, including Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and The Fog (1981), which also showcased the incredible Jamie Lee Curtis. Charles’s talent extended beyond the silver screen, as he graced television shows such as The Dukes of Hazzard, The Betty White Show, Seinfeld, JAG, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, and many more.

Known for his kindness, love, and remarkable storytelling skills, Charles was a cherished presence both on and off the screen. His manager and close friend, Chris Roe, fondly remembered him, saying, “Charles was a kind and loving man. He always told the best stories, and you were thrilled as he did them.”


Born on July 28, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, Charles followed his passion for theater arts. He obtained degrees from both California State University, Los Angeles, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, showcasing his dedication to his craft. His commitment to honing his skills led him to obtain a bachelor’s degree in theater arts and refine his talents at Los Angeles City College.

 

While Charles Cyphers left an impressive legacy through his various professional achievements, it is his roles in the Halloween movies that have forever imprinted him in cinema history. Horror fans of all generations have experienced the suspense and terror he evoked through his captivating performances.
